an angel in Merida

Coffee was poured in streams of fire. Street performers strummed and sang. Others, costumed, entertained us with Argentinean dance. People were married in the church across the avenue. Families, couples, and friends all joined us for the evening in an outdoor cafe, some engaging us in conversation.

It was here that we met an angel. She removed every one of her criss-crossed purses to retrieve a woven purse of Bonnie's choosing. Meanwhile, incessant meows were heard from little street vended whistles. People passed by selling cigarettes, lighters, roses... We soon learned it was futile to buy anything from any one vendor, guaranteeing many more visits.

We ran into this girl several times while in Merida. Never was she without a smile. And never did we tire of her presence like we did of the other vendors. Here she is shying away from my camera, laughter still in her eyes.
