Plastic Jesus

I'm not quite sure why this religious icon is wrapped in plastic. For preservation? Jesus 'died for us on a cross', and here we are suffocating him with a plastic bag. Death by plastic. Keep away from children and small animals. Is it a social statement denoting the artificiality of organized religion? Well obviously not, but the image is striking. And I mean no offense to the deceased or their family....
